Riva Dog Access Ban Sparks Protests and Petition Campaign

In recent weeks, protests have been mounting against the municipal ban – an old ordinance by Mayor Molinari – which during the summer in Riva prohibits walking dogs along the path parallel to the Purfina beach and in the entire beach area.

Protests and Petition Collection

The ‘heated’ atmosphere is confirmed by the unexpected increase in signatures on the popular petition to be presented to Mayor Malossini to remove the red disc restricting access for dog owners. Over three hundred people, and the number continues to grow, have signed the original request devised by Sonia Buzzi of San Alessandro.

Initially launched quietly at a newsstand managed by her on via Mantova in Arco and with the collaboration of some Riva colleagues, the enterprising lady now has the support of the Arco section of **Ada**, the animal protection association.

Within a few days, the organization’s leaders have gathered over fifty signatures under the slogan “Dogs at Purfina all year round” and the support continues to grow successfully.

Position of the Association

“This isn’t an unjustified interference in Riva matters,” clarify **Ada**, “where we understand that someone might say they should mind their own business in Arco – no, rather, the association operates on a regional level and among its members includes about twenty residents from Riva. It’s therefore right to support their legitimate needs and avoid unwarranted discrimination.”

Ms. Buzzi reiterates: “I would like to know from our municipal administrators the reason for their ostracism against the presence of dogs on the Purfina promenade from June to October.

Taking these animals for a walk on a leash, with a muzzle and the necessary gear for any bathroom needs, I don’t think causes problems for neighboring bathers. Of course, it is not intended to stray onto the beach beside them. Additionally, dogs are usually taken out early in the morning or late in the evening, outside the hours typically reserved for swimming or sunbathing.”

Expectations and Hopes

Ms. Buzzi expects to receive a response from the city council when she delivers the petition with hundreds of signatures. Unless, like many other issues, vague promises are made and then the inevitable silence follows.
