Riva’s Canopy Parking Sparks Safety and Regulation Concerns
The nicknames given to him are now countless, and even his hypothetical uses, jokingly proposed by the residents of Riva, are truly endless. One thing is certain, however: during the nighttime hours, the huge green canopy designed by architect Winkler, which serves to welcome passengers arriving by boat at Piazza Catena, transforms into a prestigious and convenient covered parking area.
Exactly so: once darkness falls, many motorists solve the long-standing problem of parking scarcity by parking their cars under the discussed canopy. As usual, all it takes is for someone daring to implement the reckless idea, and then everyone else follows suit.
Compliance with safety regulations and inappropriate behaviors
And so, especially on the busiest evenings, a long line of cars is proudly displayed right behind the “washing machines.” This behavior, which not only goes against the explicit no-parking restrictions set by the municipality, also represents a safety violation for the docked boats.
In fact, the law prescribes that in the immediate vicinity of docked ships or boats, a free space must always be left available, providing rescue vehicles with quick access to arrive and intervene without difficulty in case of emergency.
This emergency situation—knock on wood—could present quite a few problems in Piazza Catena, where cars often occupy every available centimeter near the docking area.
Behaviors on the beach and access rules
There is a kind of inattentiveness, which we also find at one of the most frequented places in Riva: the waterfront promenade. Here, almost daily, conflicts occur between cyclists and pedestrians, swimmers and dog owners.
Although the “war” will probably continue, it is worth recalling, in addition to the somewhat cryptic signs placed by the administration, that cyclists are allowed to access the beach but must do so walking at a slow pace; and, in any case, priority always belongs to pedestrians.
Access is strictly prohibited for dogs, even on leashes: they can return to the beach only during the winter months, accompanied by their owners.
