Alcohol and smartphones while driving: numerous reports and 11 licenses revoked in the Brescia area during the summer exodus. With the onset of the first major summer exodus, the Traffic Police have intensified checks on the main roads of the province of Brescia, focusing particularly on routes frequented by tourists. During these operations, checkpoints were set up at strategic points in the road network, leading to the discovery of various violations: seven drivers were caught with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit, and four were fined for using their smartphones while at the wheel. In all these cases, an immediate revocation of their driving licenses was enacted.

Additionally, six drivers, all aged between 40 and 50, exceeded the legal blood alcohol limit and were also criminally charged. The Brescia Police Headquarters emphasized that using a phone while driving can be likened to driving “blind,” significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Data shows that distraction is one of the leading causes of incidents resulting in injuries and fatalities; therefore, the Traffic Police plan to further enhance summer checks, including plainclothes patrols to combat reckless behavior on local roads.
