Salò and Horatian Poetry: Conference on Classical Culture

A conference dedicated to Horatian poetry took place on Thursday, October 2, at the library of Salò, inaugurating the event series “Voices of Autumn.” Professor Maria Principia Betrò, a teacher of Greek and Latin, explored the fundamental themes of the Roman poet Horace’s lyricism, emphasizing how the ephemeral can become eternal through poetry. During the meeting, key concepts such as the brevity of life and the importance of living in the present were analyzed, highlighting the famous call to carpe diem. The professor passionately shared the cultural influences that shaped Horace, describing his unique style and his ability to transform everyday experiences into memorable verses. Through evocative imagery and references to his personal life, Horace manages to express universal feelings, making immortal even that which seems fleeting. The conference thus illuminated not only the literary legacy of the poet but also his relevance in addressing humanity’s existential questions. Italian Version
