The case of Salò has sparked a heated debate on human rights and freedom of expression, following an incident on December 8th when photographer and director Giulio Tonincelli had his home visited by the carabinieri. The officers arrived to confiscate a banner reading “Free Palestine” that was displayed at Tonincelli’s window while he was in Uganda for work. The filmmaker’s elderly parents, who were present during the intervention, sought clarification from the carabinieri regarding any laws that prohibited the display of the banner but did not receive clear answers.

The incident has drawn the attention of parliamentarians Stefania Ascari and Emma Pavanelli from the Five Star Movement, who have submitted a parliamentary inquiry to Interior Minister Piantedosi. The inquiry requests clarification on the legal basis for the seizure and whether the display of the Palestinian flag could justify intervention by law enforcement. Furthermore, the parliamentarians express concerns regarding the proportionality of law enforcement actions in similar situations and call for measures to ensure the respect of constitutional rights.
