Salò has recently joined the project “The Lake Starts Here,” introducing the eco-friendly manhole cover as a measure for the protection of the lake. This new approach aims to raise awareness among citizens about the importance of avoiding the improper disposal of waste and pollutants in the manholes, which are directly connected to the waters of the lake. Salò thus becomes the second municipality, after Sirmione, to install manholes with the warning “The Lake Starts Here,” an initiative that also involves other lakeside municipalities such as Riva, Nago-Torbole, and Lazise.
The initiative is promoted by the Gardesana Servizi Company and the Municipality of Riva, launched on March 22, 2022, in conjunction with World Water Day. The goal is to draw attention to the necessity of sustainable water resource management and to promote conscious behaviors. Through this campaign, it aims to dispel the misconception that manholes are connected to sewage systems; on the contrary, rainwater and waste flow directly into Lake Garda without any filtration. The project aligns with sustainable development goals to ensure access to clean water by 2030 and hopes to expand the network of participating municipalities to further enhance the health of the lake ecosystem.
