Salò, pro-Palestine flags removed. A controversial incident has involved young activist Giulio Tonincelli, an independent photographer and documentarian, who had displayed a flag and a banner reading “Free Palestine” from the balcony of his home on Via Vittorio Emanuele II, in the center of Salò. During Tonincelli’s absence, police and carabinieri ordered his parents to take down the symbols, which had been put up in 2018 following a trip to the Gaza Strip that inspired his artistic project “Palestinian Diary.”
Currently, Giulio Tonincelli is in Ethiopia collecting testimonies about the Italian colonial presence, while the issue of the flags continues to spark debate among supporters and opponents of his initiative. The intervention of law enforcement has raised questions about freedom of expression and the rights of local activists.
