San Pellegrino Hospital Launches Free Breast Cancer Screening Campaign

San Pellegrino Hospital will start a breast cancer prevention campaign next week: all women aged 50 to 70, residing in the municipalities of the Guidizzolo district, will be invited to participate.

Presentation of the initiative

The initiative—’Breast Cancer Screening’—was announced by the medical director of the Castiglione facility, Dr. Simonetta Bettellini.

The decision to launch this campaign within the Guidizzolo healthcare district stems from careful analysis of data made available: the registry lists a total of 6,400 women between the ages of 50 and 70.

At the radiology department of San Pellegrino in Castiglione, during the first nine months of 2000, only 450 women within this age group underwent mammography.

Importance of prevention and statistical data

“While it is possible that some women received mammograms at other centers,” explained Dr. Bettellini, “the concerning fact remains that many women do not undergo this essential screening for early detection of breast cancer, which is the leading cause of death among women.”

Starting this week, 36 women every Wednesday will be invited to present themselves at the radiology service in Castiglione for mammography procedures.

Procedure and services offered

If initial examinations suggest the presence of tumor lesions, the woman will be recalled within a few days for additional tests.

All insured services will be provided to women free of charge.
