Seizure of seafood products in Verona: Indian octopuses under scrutiny
A massive seizure of Indian and Vietnamese octopuses has been carried out in the Verona area by the Coast Guard, in collaboration with Aulss 9 Scaligera. Inspectors from the 9th Fishing Control Center in Venice discovered that the octopuses, labeled as “octopus membranaceus,” were actually other species, leading to the confiscation of over 1800 kg of frozen seafood. The importer received a fine of 1,500 euros for violations related to health traceability.
Inspections were intensified in conjunction with the Venice Film Festival, where the demand for seafood had increased due to the influx of tourists. The Coast Guard emphasized the importance of monitoring the fishing supply chain to ensure product quality and to protect both fish stocks and consumer health. The inspection activities are based on thorough information gathering and a strong collaboration between health authorities and the port authority, contributing to raising food safety standards in the region.
