Recently, Sirmione has once again captured attention for its historic connection with Maria Callas, the renowned soprano who left an indelible mark on the world of opera. It is said that Callas spent her days in her villa overlooking the lake, where she dedicated herself to music and prayer in the local church. Her presence in this enchanting village was not solely linked to her career: residents recall seeing her stroll through the streets and do her shopping, making Sirmione a serene refuge during the tumultuous years of her life.

Maria Callas’s debut at the Teatro Grande in Brescia in 1950 marked the beginning of an extraordinary yet complex career, characterized by significant relationships such as her first husband Giovanni Battista Meneghini and later with Aristotle Onassis. Despite her difficult temperament and personal challenges, her time in Sirmione represents a period of tranquility away from the frenzy of fame. Today, Callas’s legacy continues to live on through her unforgettable performances and her contributions to the art of opera.
