During the first weekend of May, Sirmione faced a significant challenge related to overtourism, as a massive influx of tourists severely tested the management of tourist flows. Hoteliers and restaurateurs reported unprecedented situations, calling for urgent interventions from the local administration. Traffic was severely compromised, particularly on Friday afternoon when access to the historic center was blocked for two hours, leading to waits of up to 40 minutes for those trying to enter. Residents experienced significant disruptions, and operators in the sector were forced to manage customers who were unable to return home.

The traffic advisor, Roberto Salaorni, emphasized the need for effective strategies to control tourist flows without resorting to visitor caps. Among the proposed measures is the installation of a barrier at the entrance of the castle to address potential emergencies. The Consortium of Hoteliers and Restaurateurs and the Merchants’ Association expressed concerns regarding the safety of visitors and residents, highlighting the slow responses from the Administration despite the anticipated increase in tourism. The priority remains to ensure the safety and tranquility of the area to preserve its historical and cultural heritage.
