For the third consecutive year, Sirmione stands out nationally for the quality of its waters and its commitment to sustainable land management, earning the prestigious Blue Flag 2025. This esteemed international recognition, awarded by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education), honors environmental excellence and virtuous practices implemented in the area. The certification has been specifically granted to Jamaica Beach, located at Lido delle Grotte, one of the most characteristic and appreciated spots in the region.
The Official Award Ceremony
The flag was presented during the official ceremony held on Tuesday, May 13, in Rome, at the Italian headquarters of FEE. The award, which attests to the continuous efforts of the municipal administration in safeguarding and enhancing the environment, was received by the Mayor of Sirmione, Luisa Lavelli. In Lombardy, the Blue Flag 2025 recognition was also confirmed for two other locations on the Lake Garda: Toscolano Maderno and Gardone Riviera.
The Criteria for Awarding
The basis for obtaining the Blue Flag is a rigorous evaluation system. The quality of bathing waters and the condition of the beaches are carefully examined. Other essential parameters include sustainable land management practices, with particular attention to accessibility for people with disabilities and bathing safety. The assessment also extends to environmental education, waste and wastewater management, energy conservation, and sustainable mobility.
New Actions for Sustainability
Among the new initiatives introduced this year in the award process, administrations were required to draft a three-year sustainability plan. This programmatic document aims to coordinate and enhance actions aimed at improving the overall sustainability of the Municipality. Environmental education plays a central role, targeting students, residents, and visitors. Recent examples include the project “The lake starts here,” designed to raise awareness about the impact of daily behaviors on the lake environment.
Focus on Safety, Accessibility, and Energy
The safety and accessibility of the beach are ensured by the presence of qualified lifeguards and the necessary facilities. On July 25, Sirmione participated in the global event for bathing safety, organizing rescue demonstrations. In terms of energy, the Municipality has joined an Energy Community, embarking on a path aimed at reducing consumption and increasing the use of renewable sources with the installation of new systems in the near future. Additionally, three “Blue Points” have been established – at the Infopoint, the Municipal Library, and the Fisherman’s House – dedicated to providing information about the Blue Flag, water quality, and the services offered at the beach.
A Collective Effort
The achievement of this recognition is the result of a synergistic effort that involved various local entities. The Regional Directorate of Museums of Lombardy, the management of the archaeological area of the Grotte di Catullo, the operator of Lido delle Grotte, and municipal offices have all actively contributed. The Trebeschi School, Sirmione Servizi, and numerous local associations promoting educational initiatives and projects in the environmental field have also played an important role. The FEE, recognized by UNESCO, operates in 49 countries and promotes sustainable management of coastal areas through the Blue Flag program.
