Sirmione’s Historic Center Successfully Tests Pedestrian Zone for 2026

Sirmione’s first large-scale trial of its pedestrianization and flow management plan, Sirmione 2026, concluded successfully during the Easter weekend (April 4-6, 2026). Sensors recorded approximately 35,000 transits, while an anonymous survey estimated nearly 48,000 visitors, a 76% increase compared to 2025, with Sunday seeing over 17,000 visitors and a peak between 1 PM and 6 PM. International visitors grew by 66%, mainly from Germany, France, the UK, Switzerland, Austria, and Romania.

Flow management was coordinated by local police, Street Tutors, and CME staff, utilizing low-impact barriers and guided routes with average walking times of around three minutes. Access included electric golf carts from Grifo Parking, priority lanes for emergency vehicles, and reserved passes for residents, workers, and merchants. The trial also involved specific arrangements for buses, parking in peripheral areas, and restrictions on bicycles and scooters on pedestrian days. The municipality plans to continue this initiative under the broader Sirmione 2030 project.
