Solferino marks 167th anniversary of the Battle on June 24, 2026 with commemorations
The Municipality of Solferino and the Società Solferino e San Martino will mark the 167th anniversary of the Battle of Solferino and San Martino with celebrations in June 2026, including the main event on Wednesday, 24 June. The programme also features a historical reenactment at the San Martino della Battaglia Monumental Complex on the weekend before, 20–21 June, commemorating the 1859 battle and its role in the origins of the Red Cross.
In Solferino, events begin at 9:30 in Piazza Luigi Torelli with the welcome of authorities and representatives from civil, military and Red Cross organisations. The official ceremony starts at 10:00 with the flag-raising and national anthems, followed by a commemorative procession to Piazza Ossario and the San Pietro in Vincoli Ossuary Church for Mass at 10:30. Speeches and tributes to the fallen are scheduled for 11:15, and the programme concludes at 12:00 in Piazza Ossario with a remembrance moment for all war victims. The initiative has the patronage of multiple institutions, including the Province of Mantua and the Museo Diffuso del Risorgimento.
The reenactment on 20–21 June will start on Saturday at 11:15 with the opening of the historical camp and educational activities, with the battle reenactment set for 17:30. Sunday activities resume at 8:30, with a troops display and a commemorative ceremony at the Ossuary at 10:30. Entry to the reenactment area is free, while visits to the tower and museum follow standard access rules and ticketing available at www.solferinoesanmartino.it.
