Solferino to Renovate Torelli Square for Improved Historic Center Access
The Torelli Square in Solferino will be completely renovated. The municipal administration of the hilltop town has expressed this intention during several public meetings focused on the traffic of the historic center, and has included this project in the 2001 forecast budget.
Torelli Square is the heart of Solferino’s historic center, serving as the intersection between XX Settembre Street, Garibaldi Street, Ripa Bianca, and D’Aunant Avenue; additionally, the Town Hall building faces the square.
Project Details and Public Meetings
The preliminary design, which the city council has already reviewed in one of its recent meetings, was informally presented to residents on a couple of occasions and will be evaluated by the building commission on Friday afternoon: “This is an important and qualifying project for Solferino and for our administration, which aims to transform this major intersection into a livable area of the historic center, suitable for the tourist profile of our town.
The square will be fully paved, removing the asphalt. We will try – said the public works counselor Bignotti – to consider all suggestions received for this work, which we plan to complete in 2001.
Along with the preliminary project of the square, a traffic layout of the center has also been drafted, which should serve as the reference point for future interventions. We will present the project in the municipal budget council meeting, scheduled for early March.
Ongoing Works on Piazza Marconi
Meanwhile, work continues on the arrangement and resurfacing of the other center square of Solferino, Piazza Marconi. In recent days, after completing the groundwork, the contracting company has started laying the porphyry paving: “I believe – said the counselor – that within about twenty days, the square will be definitively finished and fully usable.”
We aim to inaugurate the work by the end of March: the first major step in a series.”
