Spring Conservation Walk in Nago Aims to Protect the Greater Swift at Oltrezengol
A guided nature walk focusing on the greater swift (Tachymarptis melba), a symbol of the Nago area, is scheduled for Saturday, March 21, at the Oltrezengol cliffs. Organized by WWF Trentino-Alto Adige, LIPU, and SOS Altissimo di Nago, the event aims to educate participants about the species’ biology and habitat, amid recent threats from climbing activities that caused nesting fatalities in July 2023 and 2024. The organizers are calling for the establishment of a local nature reserve to protect the colony.
The walk will be led by experts Alessandro Marsilli, Sergio Merz, and Aaron Iemma, starting at 9:30 AM from the Nago new cemetery and lasting approximately 3.5 hours. The route involves a 250-meter elevation gain over a 45-minute trek; participants are advised to wear trekking attire and bring water. The event is free, limited to 40 participants, and requires prior registration. In case of bad weather, the excursion will be rescheduled to March 29.
