Süddeutsche Zeitung Mocks Signage at Torbolana Beach, Garda

Irony on the signs at Torbolana beach

The authoritative German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung humorously comments on the signs at Torbolana beach. But similar signs can be found everywhere along the Garda beaches: almost always unnoticed by both locals and foreigners (and the consequences are evident). The same (and perhaps worse) happens with transit bans for bicycles.

The short piece was published last Saturday on the inside pages. It targets the signage featuring a figure with a dog on a leash. Clearly, these are prohibition signs: a line crosses out the figure on the sign.

However (and this is why it is satirized), the line is placed over the man instead of the dog. The cartoon is drawn by depicting the same dog completely free, in the act of doing its physiological needs, naturally at the bottom of the sign (and the original sign is photographed for reference).

The caption roughly says (title: Traffic signs from around the world – no. 7): “Here, a dog reflects, the owner is prohibited from the beach. So the owner has to stay at home when the clever dog goes for a walk and takes care of its business.”
