The presence of the mafia on Lake Garda, particularly in Desenzano, has been brought to the attention of Parliament thanks to an inquiry submitted by Gianni Girelli, a member of the Democratic Party from Brescia. According to Girelli, the phenomenon has been present for decades but is often overlooked or not given much consideration.

The mafia on Lake Garda operates in the underworld of contracts and hospitality structures, not so much to make money, but rather to launder it. The Garda area is very wealthy and popular, making it particularly attractive for illicit activities.

Concerns about the presence of the mafia in the area have also been raised by the renowned singer and actress Marisa Laurito. According to Professor Nando Della Chiesa, president of the Anti-Mafia Commission and an expert in the field, the mafia on Lake Garda does exist and is a problem that needs to be addressed at a national level.
