Torbole: War Remnants Found in Lake Waters, Military Intervention In recent weeks, Torbole has been the site of a significant operation to recover war remnants, conducted by the Italian Army’s bomb disposal experts in collaboration with divers from the Navy. The specialists successfully completed the recovery and controlled destruction of eight explosive devices dating back to the two World Wars, discovered off the coast of the area. Among the removed ordnance were four hand grenades from World War I, two German “Zeitzunder Grenade” rifle grenades, and two artillery shells from World War II. All devices were secured and destroyed in appropriate locations.
The operation was carried out with the utmost attention to safety, supported by law enforcement, and holds particular significance in light of the upcoming tourist season. The lake has seen similar discoveries in recent years; in 2021, artillery shells were recovered off the coast of Riva del Garda, and in 2022, two mortar bombs were found near Limone. Desenzano also recorded interventions for war remnants in 2023 and 2024, while similar incidents occurred in Malcesine and Peschiera. The most recent find was in February of this year, when three devices were identified near the shoreline of Tignale.
