Traffic Impact of Rocchetta Excavation: Concerns for Limone and Riva
To remove all the material pile that will be excavated from the Rocchetta during the construction of the tunnel for Limone, 150 truck trips are required each day, distributed over the 18 hours the site is open. In total, 18,000 trips will be made, with 5 cubic meters of rock removed each time.
Calculating that two-thirds of the material will go south (toward Campione) and one-third northward toward Riva, it can be concluded that Riva will be crossed every twenty minutes by a truck (round trip). Traffic through Limone will be double, with one trip every ten minutes, totaling one hundred trips per day.
Impact on livability and alternatives
This prospect has already alarmed operators in the Rivière Coast area, who fear significant repercussions on the town’s livability and the quality of the tourism offering, in terms of air quality and noise pollution.
Moreover, there are no alternatives; owning a bicycle implies the obligation to pedal. If the material is to be delivered to Campione, passing through Limone is unavoidable. There is no ferry that can substitute.
