Last week, in the waters of Lake Garda, a training activity called “Coastal Rescue” took place, dedicated to military personnel from the Coast Guard qualified to operate jet skis. Nine members of the Garda unit participated in this intensive training session, coordinated by training officer Commander Massimo Kothmeir, who is from the maritime authority in Genoa. Over five days of exercises, various operational scenarios for rescue and surveillance were simulated, addressing situations that involved recovering individuals from the water under different conditions.
The drills included rescues in shallow waters and steep cliffs, testing the operational capabilities of the “rescuerunner,” a jet ski designed to operate in challenging environments without the need for a stretcher. In 2024, two new jet skis will be provided to the Coast Guard by the Municipality of Manerba. So far, the military personnel have completed 123 missions, covering 1,813 miles and providing assistance to 33 people in 15 interventions, as well as aiding six recreational vessels.
