Trentino Approves Lake Garda Navigation Law with Environmental Focus

It was finally approved (with 29 votes in favor out of 33 voters) yesterday afternoon, by the provincial council, the draft law for navigation on the Lake Garda, presented by Nerio Giovanazzi and Paola Vicini Conci.

This legislation, which overhauls the overall regulation of lake navigation, aligns with national legislation and maintains focus on environmental issues.

The law concerns all lakes in Trentino, but particularly aims to fill gaps in legislation regarding the Lake Garda. Since it involves multiple territorial entities (Trentino, Lombardy, and Veneto), it is subject to a uniform regulation.

Regulation and innovations of the law

The rules put in place so far by Veneto and Lombardy have remained ineffective and unenforceable, pending the Trentino legislation.

The “Giovanazzi law” allows, among other novelties, fishermen with boats registered in the coastal municipalities, and recreational sailboats, to operate a secondary engine of no more than 8 horsepower (it is 4 hp in other Trentino lakes larger than 1 km²).

This innovation does not, in fact, alter the prohibition of motorized boats on Lake Garda Trentino but makes navigation safer for these boats.
