Valtenesi Security Project Launches to Combat Garda Crime Wave
“It is the first step in an experiment that we strongly believe in, which will undoubtedly produce the results expected by all citizens.” These are the words with which Prefect of Brescia, Annamaria Cancellieri, officially announced yesterday in Manerba the launch of the project “Valtenesi Sicura,” an alliance among the seven mayors of the region aimed at curbing the spread of crime in lower Garda.
The occasion was the official ceremony for signing the memorandum of understanding between the Prefect, the authority of the State responsible for public order, and the mayors of the Valtenesi municipalities: a particularly innovative document, the first of its kind, through which the Prefect approved this self-organized project for a well-defined territorial area, ensuring both cooperation and support from law enforcement agencies in a fight primarily focused on tackling nighttime home robberies, which has now become an emergency throughout Brescia province.
The presence of authorities such as Brescia Police Chief Paolo Scarpis, President of the Province Alberto Cavalli, and provincial leaders of the Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza, emphasized the solemnity of the event. The Prefect stated again that it was “to let Garda people know that concrete actions are being taken.” “The project by the mayors of Valtenesi convinced me from the very beginning,” said Mrs. Cancellieri.
“Beyond the solemn aspect of this signing, the important thing is that we will be united here to defeat a threat that is certainly not invincible. Of course, now we will see how the planned activities unfold and assess their actual effectiveness. Our effort is considerable, given that forces like the municipal police will work outside usual hours, that is, at night, to ensure 24-hour security. But it’s important to remember that in today’s situation, security requires everyone’s commitment, and each of us must get used to safeguarding the common good.”
Structure and implementation of the project
Mayors Isidoro Bertini of Manerba and Massimo Pollini of Moniga were tasked with summarizing the structure of the project, which, if all goes well, should become operational by the end of October. The municipalities will pool their municipal police forces to create a patrol operating 24 hours a day across the entire Valtenesi area, accessible via a toll-free number from any citizen.
This patrol will also handle reports from private individuals who have decided to install modern alarm systems in their homes, based on GSM technology and connected to an operational center located at the Manerba municipal police station (alarms will be sent via SMS messages). In short, a service that is both private and public, supported by the information and collaboration of law enforcement, thanks to the memorandum of understanding.
A Security Committee, composed of representatives from various municipal administrations, will be established to manage this initiative.
