Valvestino Celebrates Feast of St. Vigilius With Blessed Bread Distribution and Guided Walk
The Festa di San Vigilio in Valvestino returns on Saturday, June 27, with a renewed distribution of blessed bread. The event features a guided walk meeting at 9:00 at the former Austro-Hungarian border on SP 9, a roughly two-hour trek to Droane, where a Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 followed by the distribution of bread. Those wishing to join the walk or enjoy food offerings (spiedo, polenta tiragna, salamelle) must reserve at the local Infopoint.
The tradition traces back to a legend tied to an epidemic between 1496 and 1537, when many villagers died and two elderly survivors left the Droane lands with an obligation to celebrate a Mass for the dead on June 26 and to distribute a quintal of blessed bread. The custom remains in the Chiesetta of Droane, documented as early as 1186.
