The 1953 classic film “The Band Wagon,” directed by Vincente Minnelli and starring Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse, will be screened on April 8 as part of the final thematic cycle of the Monday Cinema film club, titled “The Enchanted World of Vincente Minnelli.”

The film’s plot revolves around Tony Hunter, a dancer and actor who finds himself in financial difficulties. He is invited by his friends Lester and Lily Marton to participate in a theatrical revue in New York, directed by Jeffrey Cordova. Despite creative differences with Cordova, Tony agrees to be part of the production. However, the opening night proves to be a failure, and Cordova is forced to admit that Tony was right. The revue is then reworked according to the Martons’ ideas and directed by Tony, achieving great success both on tour and in New York.

In 1995, the film was selected to be preserved in the National Film Registry of the United States Library of Congress, recognizing its cultural significance.

The screening will take place at the auditorium of the Conservatory in Riva del Garda at 9 p.m. Before the film starts, Ludovic Maillet, the curator of the film club, will introduce the audience to the cinematic context.

To attend the screening, it is necessary to have the FIC (Italian Federation of Film Clubs) membership card, which can also be obtained on the evening of the event. The cost of the card is 12 euros (5 euros for students up to 25 years old) and grants access to all the screenings of the season.

Monday Cinema is a film club organized by the municipalities of Arco and Riva del Garda, aiming to provide an in-depth view of films, directors, and film genres, as well as being a place for meeting, dialogue, and discussion. The initiative was launched in 2011 and every autumn presents a selection of films that have made history in cinema, divided into thematic cycles. The screenings alternate between the auditorium of Palazzo dei Panni in Arco and the auditorium of the Conservatory in Riva del Garda.

To reach the auditorium of the Conservatory in Riva del Garda, GPS coordinates are provided on the event’s website. You can find more information here.
