Veneto Funds Securement Leaves Brescia Garda Ring Road Incomplete
Veneto “freezes” the hopes of the Brescia Garda area regarding the completion of the “big variant” to the state road 11 in the Lower Lake. In fact, funds secured by the Region for financing the improvement works of the road are allocated to the Peschiera-Castelnuovo section and not to the segment between Rovizza di Sirmione and Peschiera. Therefore, the “gap” remains in the most trafficked area, precisely the zone encompassing the border between the provinces of Brescia and Verona, which connects the ring road from Brescia to Calcinato and from there to Lonato and Desenzano, all the way to San Martino della Battaglia. This news emerged during the “meeting” on Lower Lake road issues held recently at the municipality of Sirmione, initiated by the provincial councilor Ing. Mauro Parolini.
Meeting and confirmation of funding
Participants in the meeting included representatives from all interested entities. The two Regions and their respective Provinces were represented, along with Anas and the four Municipalities represented by the mayors of Desenzano, Sirmione, Peschiera, and Castelnuovo. “Well,” explains Maurizio Ferrari, mayor of Sirmione, “the news regarding the funding for the works has been confirmed. However, the funds are not allocated for the completion of the missing section, that is, between Sirmione and Peschiera, but for the section entirely within the Verona territory, connecting the Peschiera-Castelnuovo bypass to the roundabout linking to the bypass leading to Affi and the Brenner motorway toll booth.”
Thus, the traffic situation between Desenzano, Sirmione, and Peschiera appears destined to remain unchanged for at least a few years, meaning residents and tourists will be forced to endure the problems caused by traffic and queues. Ironically, the new ring road is open in the segment between “Perla” in Desenzano and San Martino della Battaglia. The state road can only be traveled in the direction from Desenzano to Sirmione, including the subsequent stretch between San Martino and Sirmione. The opposite direction remains inaccessible. Additionally, the road segment leading to the Rovizza hamlet, ending among the Lugana vineyards, remains completely unused.
Situation and future actions
This is a decidedly paradoxical situation, especially considering it has persisted for several years and seems destined to continue for some time, at least until funds are available and the works are undertaken. For this reason, the Municipalities involved have decided to launch a strong awareness campaign directed at the regional authorities and Anas, urging the allocation of the necessary funds to complete the ring road and, more generally, to represent the citizens’ interests.
The Sirmione Municipal Administration has also decided to request the designers to include, at the Rovizza hamlet, an exit ramp and to connect it to the old route of state road 11 via a new “bretella” (link road) to be constructed outside the town, so as not to penalize local residents. Essentially, this would revert to the original design solution, with the addition of establishing a link between the new ring road and the old state road route outside the populated area.
“This is our decision,”
confirms Mayor Maurizio Ferrari. “We will see if Anas accepts our request.”
