Venice Restores 15th-Century Wooden Tablets Depicting Notable Figures

The civic government of the city has decided to restore the wooden tablets — 45 centimeters by 20 centimeters — painted in tempera in the second half of the 15th century. Over two hundred of them decorated the original coffered ceiling of the Salone dei Provveditori Serenissimi in Venice. Due to the damage accumulated over the centuries, about sixty tablets require urgent «conservation» due to the presence of cracks and abrasions.

Description of the Tablets

The tablets depict faces of notable figures from the era, coats of arms, and local animals, showcasing fine artistic craftsmanship. For the restoration, the civic administration has requested support from Regione Lombardia for the funds allocated to recover works of historical and cultural interest.

Restoration Interventions

These efforts are part of the ongoing restoration of the prestigious municipal building, aimed at renewing the magnificent monument that bears witness to the Venetian lordship.
