Waste in Lake Garda: Desenzano discovers alien species

Desenzano: Over 100 Kilograms of Waste Recovered from the Port, A Possible New Alien Species Emerges. On Sunday morning, an important cleanup operation took place at the port of Desenzano, where more than one hundred kilograms of waste were extracted from the lake’s depths and shores. The initiative, which saw the active participation of dozens of volunteers, marks the beginning of a collaboration between WWF Italy and Lidl Italy as part of the “Adopt Rivers and Lakes” project. Among the materials recovered were 60 kilograms of metals, 20 kilograms of plastic, and unusual items such as a drill and a candlestick, highlighting the issue of pollution in the local waters.

During the underwater operations, a marine sponge was also discovered that could represent a new alien species for Lake Garda. If confirmed by ongoing genetic analyses conducted by WWF, this discovery would increase the number of alien species already present in the Garda basin, currently estimated at 44. The event also involved local groups such as Talata Sub Desenzano and Tritone Sub, as well as the Naval League and other cultural associations in the area, with support from the Coast Guard to ensure the safety of the operations.
