Water Conservation Focus at Lions Club Convention in Desenzano
The true challenge of the third millennium? Water. This is the assertion of the Lions Club organization, which is organizing a convention next Saturday in Desenzano entitled “Sorella acqua, conoscerla per salvarla” (“Sister Water, Knowing It to Save It”). Among the objectives of the conference, which was presented yesterday morning at Palazzo Bagatta, the seat of the Municipality, is to launch an awareness and education campaign aimed at current generations to promote the proper use and conservation of this precious resource. In the early 2000s, water will undoubtedly pose a severe problem for many countries, including ours.
Another goal is to undertake a training and educational initiative involving families, schools, public institutions, and private companies. Attending as speakers at the convention will be Professor Pierfrancesco Ghetti (Dean of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Venice), Dr. Italo Melchiorre (Past President of the Order of Chemists of Bologna), Dr. Antonella Bertolotti (doctor at Intermed, an organization for international health cooperation), then Dr. Guido Premazzi (European Community Environment Institute), and Professor Gabriele Borsani (Department of Biology at the University of Milan).
The final speaker scheduled is Dr. Giorgio Foschini, a veteran of the Lions Club Gardesano and already an expert on Lake Garda’s community regarding environmental issues. The insights gathered from Saturday’s convention will be supplemented with additional scientific material and compiled into a volume and a CD, which will then be disseminated by the Lions clubs of the Brescia district in schools of all levels.
Support and Promotion of the Initiative
The Provveditorato agli studi di Brescia (Brescia School Office), as the organizers inform, has already expressed interest and given its favorable opinion. But the Lions’ efforts do not end there; they plan to promote scholarships and awards related to the water resource, encouraging students and Lions members to commit confidently to addressing the water issue.
Yesterday morning, in the presence of Mayor Cino Anelli, former Mayor Bruno Croveglia, and the leaders of the Lions Club of the Lake Garda district, the entire initiative was presented. It also has the patronage of the Municipality of Garda, the Province of Brescia, and the Lombardy Region. The presentations will focus on major debated topics: free waters versus “prisoner” waters, the integrated cycle, the evolving trends in the quality of waters in the large Po Valley lakes, as well as water resources in small African communities and the importance of thoroughly understanding this valuable resource to protect it from pollution and dispersion.
Event Details
The event, with free entry, is scheduled for Saturday, May 26, at 9:00 AM at the Palazzo del Turismo, in front of Porto Vecchio.
