Western Gardesana Landslide Repair Underway After Summit at Limone Town Hall
Roccists working after Monday’s summit at the Limone town hall with technicians from Anas of Milan to define the timing and methods of work to restore usability to the Western Gardesana, interrupted by the landslide that occurred Saturday night.
A couple of weeks will be needed for the excavation works, which have already begun and continued even in the rain; thereafter, the removal of material from the roadway can begin.
Interventions and hypotheses for reopening
If the damage to the road surface proves to be minor – and if the new landslide between Toscolano and Bogliaco confirms a less severe event that does not pose issues for the machinery needed for rapid intervention – it will be possible to clear the roadway and reopen traffic immediately, perhaps with alternating one-way traffic.
If it becomes necessary to reconstruct significant sections, obviously more time will be required.
Safety measures and alternative routes
As Mayor Martinelli told us, there will then be an urgent need to install a para-masso along the entire exposed section from Nanzel downward: this work was already included in a multi-year, 40-billion-euro program by the Anas division of Milan, allocated to the Western Gardesana, and the landslide is expected to elevate it to the top priority.
For now, however, those traveling to the towns south of Limone still have the option of using the Tremosine-Tignale road or the special ferry connections departing from Limone at 7:00 and 14:00 (large vehicles up to 30 tons and 9 meters length are allowed), or hydrofoils departing from Limone at 9:00 and 17:10, which Navigarda has reinstated connecting Toscolano-Maderno.
