Controversy Erupts Over Regulated Coregonus Fishing in Garda
The Lake Garda region is set to begin a new season of coregone repopulation, with regional assessor Alessandro Beduschi announcing that operations will commence in February. Professional fishermen will be allowed to collect egg-laden female coregones to transfer them to the Desenzano hatchery, where the fry will be born. However, this initiative has raised concerns about the controlled harvesting of the species, prompting the Asd Tirlindana to request limitations on the number of participating fishermen and increased oversight by authorities.
Asd Tirlindana president Davide Colosio emphasized the need to prevent the overharvesting of adult coregones and suggested that collections should cease once the necessary quota for the hatchery is met. He also expressed worries about indiscriminate fishing during the breeding season and called for a review of economic penalties for poaching, which are currently deemed insufficient to deter illegal activities that harm both professional and sport fishermen.
