Lugana DOC Wines Shine in Luca Maroni’s 1998 Wine Guide
As at the end of every year, the Italian and international book markets are welcoming the new Guide to Wines 1998. This extensive editorial landscape allows all enthusiasts of the wine world to know which are, according to authoritative authors, the best wines on the market. An opinion, expressed through these volumes, that is highly personal and remains solely in the hands of those who have conducted the tastings. It must not be forgotten that the best wine is the one we like.
The first of the guides, which will be published from now until early 1999, is that of Luca Maroni, a young Roman wine expert who, in just a few years, has established himself in the narrow landscape of industry experts. Two of his newly printed volumes are: Annual of the Best Italian Wines and Guide to Italian Wines.
Maroni assigns a rating and a score to each. For a wine to appear in the guide, it must have received, during tasting, a score above 60/100.
Lugana DOC Wines and Tasting Results
Regarding Lugana DOC wines, in this edition, 25 are selected and marked among the 17 companies that sent samples, which Maroni carefully and punctually indicates along with the date of the tasting.
Excellent results, with scores above 74/100, are achieved by 2 sweet or dessert wines, labeled Lugana: Sol Dorà and Tre Filer, which are worthy of appearing, for the first time, among Italy’s top 40 wine-fruits.
A significant improvement compared to the previous edition, which listed 21 wines from 12 companies. This signs the ongoing professionalism demonstrated by the producers themselves, who, once reaching a certain stability in quality, are now mostly focusing on maintaining it.
This is a correct approach that rewards the efforts of individual producers, with a continuous increase in requests and orders from around the world.
Every year, new markets open for Lugana DOC, markets that perhaps yesterday seemed unreachable, rewarding the commitment of both winegrowers and the Consorzio di Tutela, which is increasingly involved in promoting and enhancing the product in its different types: still and sparkling.
Great attention is now being paid to the new product, permitted by the recently approved disciplinary regulation published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale. This concerns the cru of Lugana, specifically the Lugana Superiore, which requires at least one year of aging and refinement starting from October 1st of the year of grape harvest.
