New Research in Fiavé Carera’s Peat Bog

Archaeological research has resumed in the Fiavé Carera peat bog, after about 40 years, in the UNESCO-recognised area of the pile-dwelling site. The excavation is being coordinated by the Archaeological Heritage Office of the Autonomous Province of Trento’s Department for Cultural Heritage, and began with a 12-square-metre stratigraphic test pit presented on 19 August in the presence of provincial culture councillor Francesca Gerosa.

The work aims to assess the condition of the deposit and the wooden structures, identifying measures to limit deterioration and applying new methods from archaeometry and bioarchaeology. The initial survey will be expanded by around 10 square metres to the south to study how the first settlement was organised. Due to the humid environment, the site has preserved wood, seeds, fruits and other organic materials, offering evidence of human activity from the Neolithic through the early Late Bronze Age.
