Garda Uno Discusses Environmental Goals and Future Collaboration with Brescia Province

The recent meeting between the delegation of l’Azienda Speciale Consorzio Garda Uno, led by President Guido Maruelli and comprising Board Members Walter Romagnoli and Nicola Scotti, along with the General Director Franco Richetti, and the new President of the Province of Brescia, Alberto Cavalli, was not solely about pleasantries. The Regional Councillor Franco Nicoli Cristiani was also present.

Topics Covered and Future Commitments

The meeting, held at the Broletto, aimed to inform and make known to the Provincial President the true scope of Garda Uno, the municipal utility of Lake Garda, and especially its future programs. Notably, Garda Uno demonstrates significant commitment to the protection and safeguarding of the environment, becoming an ultimate defender of these goals for many years.

During the peak of August, the Brescia shore of Lake Garda was officially declared fully bathing-safe by the same ASL, a first-time occurrence.

Guido Maruelli explained to President Cavalli Garda Uno’s current commitments regarding the services offered to member municipalities, which include waste management, environmental hygiene, integrated water cycle management—topics governed by national laws (Ronchi and Galli)—and the new SIT (Sistema Informativo Territoriale – Territorial Information System) service that Garda Uno provides to its members.

The organization comprises around one hundred employees, with its main headquarters in Portese and additional branches in Toscolano, San Felice del Benaco – industrial area, and Desenzano. It also manages the main treatment plant in Peschiera del Garda, the core of the entire wastewater treatment system serving both Brescia and Verona areas.

Future and Collaboration with the Province

Looking ahead, all efforts regarding territorial scope focus on the future, particularly in relation to the recent Galli and Ronchi laws, aiming to reach an interregional agreement between the municipalities of l’Azienda Gardesana Servizi and Garda Uno.

According to Maruelli, the Province plays a key role as a coordination point for these issues. He mentioned that he has asked the Provincial President—who, as Maruelli states, was not overly reserved but absent due to the lack of the relevant provincial councillor—to inform the Provincial Assessor Enzo Cossu of Garda Uno’s needs and priorities. An initial meeting with Cossu has already been scheduled for early September.

Regarding the future, Maruelli stated that Garda Uno aims to become an increasingly defining entity, driven by the strength and will of its members. It is up to us to decide whether we want to continue playing a leading role in service decisions or if, alternatively, we should lower our flag and let others take on this role.

We believe we are in a good position to succeed. Certainly, we think that key moments of coordination and problem-solving should pass through the Province. Consequently, we place significant trust in this level of government for support and guidance, and we will do our best to contribute.

This is the core message, concludes Maruelli: the Province will certainly organize a meeting as soon as possible among all stakeholders involved in ecological matters, with the goal of pooling the synergies that each organization has in its specific areas of expertise.
