Toscolano Maderno Celebrates Literary Contest with Industry and Culture
Inauguration and Activities of the Literary Contest
Even the Minister of Industry, Enrico Letta, sent his congratulations. Every year, Toscolano Maderno takes the occasion of May 1st to award young people.
The senior workers of the paper mill, gathered in an association chaired by Giorgio Bombardieri, organize the “Girolamo Marchi” literary contest. They invite middle school students to confront a series of topics. This year’s topics were: the technological renewal of the paper mill, migratory flows, hopes for 2000, the relationship with the elderly, and a poem.
Selection and Awarding of Young Authors
The teachers (Roberto Righettini, Irene Giorgianni, Antonio Foglio, and Elisabetta Daolio) carried out an initial screening of the submitted essays. Then, the jury, led by Bruno Tedeschi, the accountant-poet, selected the winners. Their names.
Class 2A: Ester Caldana, Silvia Vicentini, and Alice Michelini, with an honorable mention for Emanuele Guarnaccia and Alef Usardi. 2B: Tatiana Muscetta, Elisa Pelato, and Semina Dervic; honorable mentions for Silvia Campanardi and Diego Hoerner.
Class 3A: Claudio Costa, Elisa Cozzaglio, and Sara Moniga; honorable mentions for Giovanni Caldana and Graziano Zambiasi. 3B: Michele D’Angelo, Barbara Marini, and Michela Tonincelli; honorable mentions for Valentina Bigoloni and Semir Dervic.
Gathering Moments and Authorities’ Statements
The school auditorium was packed: students, parents, teachers, Mayor Paolo Elena, the former Silvano Boni, the councilors, the band led by Walter Rosa, the hotel owners’ president Marcello Beschi, and the paper mill employees (the company is the largest on the Brescia shore).
“School – said Giuseppe Auriemma, the principal’s assistant – forms the fundamental foundation of society. Besides instructing, it must educate, foster correct behaviors, and develop awareness of each person’s importance within the community.”
Massimo Perini, factory delegate, focused on internal issues (the modifications introduced on the X continuous machine, which produces coated paper, require workers’ updates), urging local administrators to remove the old plan for the mega port from the new zoning plan.
Company Investments and Future Projects
Girolamo Marchi, the CEO of the paper mill, spoke about the investments made (the purification system, one of the largest in Europe, capable of serving a city of 80,000 inhabitants; the operation of a gas-powered plant that, by eliminating pollutant emissions into the air and controlling fuel deliveries via tankers, allows the production of the electricity and steam needed for processing; etc.), explaining that more space will need to be used.
It is likely that a warehouse will be built within the Ulivi field (the soccer activity has moved to the “Ugo Locatelli” stadium), owned by the company. There also seems to be a possibility of creating a parking lot for workers and trucks.
Reflections on Culture and the Company’s Future
“For a generation like mine, lacking security, the paper mill is a fundamental reality, a point of reference, a job certainty” – wrote a girl. “I hope the Marchi family continues its journey on… paper wings for many years to come.”
