Reasons for the strike

The reasons that, against our will, drive us to this gesture — write the inmates in a statement — are multiple, but they all converge on a main issue: the closure of the prison by June 30th.

“There are no other penitentiary facilities in all of Northern Italy,” emphasize the inmates, “that can host former law enforcement officers, ensuring treatment activities and security. This would force us to be held at the S. Maria Capua Vetere military prison, 800 kilometers away: an unacceptable situation.”

“Despite our appeals to the highest institutional and ecclesiastical authorities,” the inmates conclude, “we have observed a disturbing indifference to a problem that is vital for us and our families.”
