Desenzano Proposes Ban on Heavy Vehicles to Reduce City Center Traffic
Remove heavy traffic from the city center. This is the proposal put forward by Lega Nord desenzanese, which also receives support from the municipal administration.
The idea, not entirely new, could this time be implemented independently, meaning without involving other municipalities, provinces, or regions.
The issue of heavy traffic was raised this time by Rino Polloni, opposition councilor, who was struck by the significant increase in traffic passing through what was once the state highway 11 and has now been downgraded to a municipal road.
We are talking about the stretch between the traffic light at Viale Andreis and Via Agello, on the opposite side towards Rivoltella.
This segment has been downgraded but still falls under the jurisdiction of UM:ed, including the section between Viale Andreis and the roundabout at La Perla, where there’s the Standa supermarket, as it is considered outside the Desenzano town limits.
Rino Polloni thus addressed the mayor with a letter, highlighting that in recent times there has been an increase in traffic, especially heavy vehicles, on the road that crosses the Desenzano town center.
Many heavy vehicles over 3.5 tons travel the mini bypass from Padenghe, he writes, then divert towards Verona, passing through the entire town center.
However, there is an alternative to this route that cuts through our municipality, the letter continues, because a variant of the state highway 11 has long been open, connecting the Standa supermarket to the S. Martino interchange.
And since the tourist season is approaching, the Lega group leader proposes to impose a no-left-turn restriction on the mini bypass, which is a municipal road, at the intersection with Viale Andreis, in the direction of Verona.
This ban should also be applied in the opposite direction for those coming from Sirmione at the Biblò area in Rivoltella.
The prohibition in both directions should be permanent.
Mayor’s considerations and alternative proposals
«I think it’s a sensible idea», comments Mayor Felice Anelli at first glance.
«The issue of heavy traffic passing through the town, cut in two by the road, is a major problem for Desenzano.
Moreover, the city is also dealing with other issues caused by ongoing work at the La Perla roundabout.
That’s why I immediately forwarded the request to the police command to provide a ruling on the proposal, after which I will make a decision.»
The idea of diverting heavy traffic from the Statale in Lower Garda is not new.
About ten years ago, tourism companies and hoteliers devised a project to divert heavy traffic onto the Serenissima highway, between Desenzano and Peschiera.
The idea was also supported by the Lombardy region, which, on the proposal of then traffic assessor Biscardini, enacted a specific law addressing also the expense issues, based on investigations carried out by the local traffic police.
The initiative failed because the Veneto region did not approve a similar measure.
The current proposal has the advantage of redirecting trucks over 3.5 tons onto the bypass.
Meanwhile, the Municipality has decided to commission the design of the 4th exit of the bypass, which should serve the entire Grezze area.
