Honest Acts: Malcesine Resident Returns Lost Large Sum of Money

Whoever said that we are all now children of the god of money should reconsider. That is not the case; there are still those who believe in certain values, which perhaps have been somewhat lost in a society like the current one, but it seems that honest people are still around. This is demonstrated by the act of generosity of an anonymous Malcesine resident, who was fortunate enough to be the recipient, Ruggero Barzoi, owner of Bar Ancora. A few days ago, he lost a small bag containing several millions of lire, the takings from the last few days. He had no hope of getting them back.

The person who found them, but who prefers to remain anonymous, and who performed a noble and honest deed, handed them over to the Carabinieri on Wednesday afternoon. “Saturday night, around two o’clock, I closed the bar and, as usual, headed home,” recounts Barzoi. “At a certain point, I realized I had lost my bag containing the money. I was holding several bags, even those for garbage, so I must have accidentally dropped it without noticing. I woke my wife, who immediately joined me, and together we went back; we retraced the entire route we took that evening several times, but the money was gone.”

Return of the money and reactions

So the Barzoi couple went to the authorities, the Carabinieri and local police, but with little hope of reclaiming their earnings. “I want to thank,” concludes Barzoi happily, “the person who, to my great surprise, handed the money over to the Carabinieri. Not only did he perform an act of great kindness towards me, but he also proved that for some, honesty still matters, and that not everyone is a slave to the god of money.”

The anonymous person received a reward, as is customary, amounting to 5% of the sum. The lost bag also contained a wallet and other cards, but no documents, which, strangely, were not returned. The Carabinieri had been informed on Tuesday evening about the discovery and immediately notified the owner, who had resigned himself to the idea—encouraged by his wife—that it might have been a donation, perhaps to someone in need.

Unconfirmed reports and another testimony

It appears that more than one person may have performed this act of generosity. According to some rumors, the money was found by a group of people who, that evening, shortly after the bar closed, gathered outside to chat before going to bed. The outside of the place has benches, and the people in question sat for a few minutes, during which they saw the bag. Instead of dividing the “loot,” the group returned it to the rightful owner.
