Desenzano to Launch First Bicycle Path Connects Lake Garda Town

After years of promises, words, and good intentions, the capital of Garda is finally materializing the project for the city’s first bicycle path. It will connect the area of the swimming pools on Via Michelangelo, in Rivoltella, with the railway station. The route is approximately just under two kilometers long.

Projects and Funding

The good news concerns the appointment of the tender commission for the realization of bicycle lanes, but above all, the arrival of a contribution of 200 million euros from the Regione Lombardia. The tender for the works will be carried out next month, meaning that works could begin in September.

The cost of the project is around 500 million euros. As we have mentioned, bicycle lanes have been a topic of discussion in Desenzano for years. At least since Mayor Bruno Croveglia commissioned a feasibility study to develop numerous routes with an investment nearing 7 billion euros.

Territory and Bicycle Routes

The paths would cover much of the territory, radiating out from the city center to reach Maguzzano in the neighboring Lonato countryside, Rivoltella, San Martino, and other scenic areas known for monuments, works of art, ponds, viewpoints, as well as restaurants and resting areas, wineries.

Desenzano’s surroundings offer plenty in this regard: from the historic sites of the Risorgimento battles of San Martino and Solferino to churches, morainic hills, vineyards, and wines from the lake.

These can be explored following the “cycling itineraries” well illustrated in a brochure published by the Comune and promoted also through dedicated signs.

Lake Garda, especially when the weather provides a respite from the summer heat, offers abundant opportunities for cycling enthusiasts, who are increasingly numerous.
