Lake Water Levels Drop Below Summer Averages, Affecting Navigation
The water level of the lake is well below the usual values for summer seasons in previous years.
Observations along the lakeside promenade
This is immediately noticeable when strolling along the lakeside in Lazise, Peschiera, and Bardolino. The breakwaters located right next to the dock are clearly visible emerging from the water, thanks to their lighter coloration resulting from the significant drop in the lake’s water level.
Despite a summer season characterized by a lack of sunshine and abundant rain, the lake waters continue to recede. This has been noticed in recent weeks by numerous foreign tourists walking along the lakesides of the affected towns, and they have repeatedly highlighted this to hoteliers and farmers where they are staying.
Official reports and consequences
The phenomenon has also been brought to the attention of the Verona Water Magistrate by Marcello Coppola, director of the company Navigarda. He pointed out that the current severe water shortage in the lake, which has worsened significantly during the first week of August, could compromise navigation for at least two or three vessels in the fleet.
