Università Ambiente Monte Baldo Celebrates 11 Years of Environmental Education
Tomorrow evening at 8:30 PM, in the hall of the former Pretura of Caprino, Università Ambiente Monte Baldo will present the courses and activities for its eleventh year. The evening, which will include a slide show, will also be an opportunity to discuss the future of Monte Baldo in light of the recent proposal to establish a national park.
Since 1990, the gruppo Ctg Monte Baldo of Caprino has annually offered a series of courses aimed at exploring the Baldense territory, under the auspices of the University. These initiatives have been gaining considerable success. Over the past 11 years, more than a hundred courses have been organized on a wide range of topics, from geological to botanical aspects, from history to popular traditions and dialect, from gastronomy to astronomy and art, with over two thousand participants, explains Ctg Vice President Elisa Fattorelli.
Goals and Collaborations of the Initiative
The courses are held across various villages in Baldo Garda and in Verona because Università Ambiente aims to develop, deepen, and disseminate knowledge about the Monte Baldo area through proper environmental education that employs research methodology and personal discovery, engaging participants through direct and meaningful contact with the environment.
The initiative is supported by the Comunità Montana and local municipalities of Baldense towns and is developed in collaboration with other local institutions, such as libraries and cultural associations.
The key to understanding the mechanisms and rhythms governing Baldo Garda is a thorough knowledge of the territory, both physically, biologically, and socially, to foster effective environmental protection and proper valorization, continues Fattorelli. With Università Ambiente, we seek to make participants responsible protagonists of their own territory.
Activities and Future Programs
This is a dissemination effort that the Ctg also pursues through a series of periodic publications, studies, conferences, exhibitions (such as the traveling display on Baldense mountain huts), and the organization of educational visits and guided excursions on the territory.
For 2000-2001, programs include a course on the landscape of Baldo Garda and its transformations, led by geographer Eugenio Turri starting October 27 in Caprino; a course on popular dances; and one for tourism and cultural animators of Garda and the inland areas, scheduled for October and November.
Courses on castles and fortifications, the territory of the municipality of Ferrara di Montalbido, and the flora of the inland Garda area are also planned. The program concludes with courses on typical gastronomy, cultural animation, astronomical observation outings, and a course on dinosaurs and their remains.
Beyond courses, Università Ambiente also organizes awareness exhibitions, conferences, and guided Sunday hikes open to everyone. It publishes books on the knowledge of the Baldense territory, including the cultural journal Il Baldo, now in its eleventh issue, and is also implementing, after projects on popular art and washing fountains, a census of calcàre and the kilns of Baldo-Garda.
