History and Significance of the Book of Kells: An Illuminated Masterpiece
One of the most beautiful books in the world is the Book of Kells: it consists of four illuminated Gospels dating from the 8th to the 9th centuries, probably created by Irish monks. The first document referencing it is dated 1006 and describes the theft of the Book of Kells. The chapter openings are in ornate capitals, with the initial verses in larger characters filled with decorations and colors.
