Veneto Region Funds Restoration of Peschiera Water Fortress Barracks

There is not much time left until the inauguration of the restoration of the Cacciatori barracks, scheduled for spring. This is the only project from the Regione Veneto included in the Konver European funding program, a significant intervention because it aims to restore to the community one of the most picturesque corners of the town, fully recognized as part of the association of walled cities of Veneto.

Last Friday, a delegation from the association, led by President Enrico Hullweck, mayor of Vicenza, visited the Arilicense center, starting with the Cacciatori site. “The story of this extraordinary complex is an example of the importance of safeguarding these witnesses of history to restore their social expressiveness for the towns. A complex project,” said Hullweck, “to which all institutions must contribute, starting with the Regione Veneto.”

Interventions and regional commitment

Enrico Cavaliere, President of the Regional Council, responded by confirming the Region’s interest in “a heritage linked to our history; however, we lack the autonomy we would like, but we work both in this direction and by supporting the association’s initiatives.”

“In addition to contributing to projects, the Region can activate channels and resources related to international funding and projects: in other sectors, this mechanism is already well-established,” Cavaliere emphasized, “and we will ensure that it happens for the historical-cultural sector as well.”

Visit to the fortified city

The Cacciatori barracks, the Historic Pavilion, Forte Ardietti, and the guided tour of the fortified town with a boat excursion along the channels inside the Bastions allowed the association’s delegation to get an in-depth look at Peschiera, whose uniqueness comes precisely from being a Water Fortress.

The association’s commitment, which in the near future aims to establish an institutional role, is to support administrations in the effort to take ownership of a heritage otherwise destined to be sold to private individuals.
