Rosario: Origin, Meaning, and Popularity in Italy
It derives from the Latin noun ‘rosarium’, which means ‘rosary, rose garden’. Its origin is linked to the tradition of forming a sort of crown of roses in honor of the Madonna, a gesture accompanied by a long series of prayers.
The object used to count the prayers was also called a rosary. Pope Pius V considered the rosary the best prayer to overcome difficulties.
Diffusion and usage of the name
Rosario is therefore a Christian name associated with Marian devotion, widely popular in Sicily and Calabria.
