Sirmione Unveils Salvo D’Acquisto Monument in Ceremony with Local Authorities
In recent days, in Sirmione, the monument dedicated to Salvo D’Acquisto was inaugurated, the Carabinieri vice brigadier who sacrificed his life during World War II to save 22 others.
The inauguration event had been organized by the twin sections of Sirmione and Desenzano of the Associazione Nazionale Carabinieri, chaired respectively by Vincenzo Di Donato and Cosimo Venneri. The ceremony began in Desenzano, with the raising of the flag in front of the Carabiniere monument, in the presence of numerous civil and military authorities: Desenzano mayor Cino Anelli, his Sirmione counterpart Maurizio Ferrari, and Pozzolengo mayor Paolo Bellini.
Authorities and attendees at the ceremony
Then, the Lega senator Massimo Wilde, the commander of the Desenzano Carabinieri Company, Captain Franco Giandinoto, Marshal Flavio Peruzzo, station commander, and Marshal Giuseppe Lorito, commander of the Sirmione station, were present. Also attending were Fabio Volpari from the Desenzano operational unit and the Sirmione municipal police chief Carlo Caromani. A delegation of the Desenzano municipal police was also there.
After the flag-raising, participants headed to the Church of San Francesco in Colombare di Sirmione, to proceed in procession along the surrounding streets up to via Salvo D’Acquisto, where the monument was repositioned. The procession was accompanied by the band of Lonato, directed by Maestro Carlo Righetti. A notable presence was also formed by representatives of other armed associations, with about twenty groups and their banners.
Description of the monument and the ceremony
The monument, as a reminder, was designed by architect Azzali from Sirmione and built by the Zaffaina company. Due to traffic considerations, the work was initially placed inside a traffic circle, which is no longer permitted by law, but also because of the need to find a more suitable location for the values it represents, as the Sirmione mayor Ferrari has repeatedly stated.
This led to its relocation to a green space. Returning to the ceremony, it continued with the flag-raising and the national anthem, performed once again by the Lonato band. The speeches followed, with Mayor Ferrari explaining the reasons that prompted the monument’s repositioning, and Captain Giandinoto addressing the audience as well.
Finally, the Desenzano and Sirmione sections of the Associazione Nazionale Carabinieri presented the Sirmione civic administration with a parchment and a miniature depiction of a Carabiniere, before participating in the traditional conviviale moment at the Ancora d’Oro restaurant, which marked the conclusion of the inaugural morning.
