Trento Bishop Confirms Church’s Right to Holy Masses Worth 984M Lire
The Bishop of Trento, Monsignor Bressan, confirmed yesterday in a press conference that the Curia has no intention of relinquishing the 64,972 Holy Masses, amounting to 984 million lire, which the Municipality of Riva should have had celebrated since 1963, in accordance with a legacy registered in the cadastral records against the building of the Inviolata convent.
The municipality attempted, through the courts, to have the obligation canceled, but the judiciary’s response was negative. After years of silence, the matter has resurfaced when Monsignor Bressan, newly appointed in the Vigilio di Trento diocese, reviewed old documents and discovered that the credit was still due.
Since 1963, the Municipality has not fulfilled its duty, Monsignor Bressan recalled. It is a moral as well as legal obligation that the bishop must invoke, and which the Municipality cannot neglect.
Currently, negotiations are ongoing with the Municipality “in a discreet manner, as is appropriate for such matters”.
