Castiglione Demographic Growth Continues with Population Reaching 18,460

The positive demographic trend continues in the town. By the end of 2000, the population reached 18,460 residents compared to 18,139 the previous year, marking an increase of 321 people or 1.8%. It had been several years since such a significant rise in residents was recorded, especially considering the natural balance, which remained strongly positive despite trends in other areas of the province.

Analysis of natural balance and migration

Data quickly processed by the demographic services of Palazzo Gonzaga highlights the difference between births and deaths in 2000. The natural balance was +51, almost double that of 1999, driven more by males (+44) than females (+7). There were 200 births against 149 deaths, and men’s numbers were the ones that increased most significantly.

It is clear that a substantial part of the demographic boom is still due to immigration, with a net gain of 270 people, again predominantly males (+159) compared to females (+111). These positive signs also increase the population density, which is gradually growing in a territory that is relatively limited: the density has increased from 431 to 439 inhabitants per square kilometer, a substantial rise that further strengthens Castiglione‘s leading position in Mantova.

Families, births, and migratory movements

The number of family units rose from 6,703 to 6,824 (+121), which means each family averages 2.7 members, exactly as in 1999. Among statistical curiosities from the registry data, it emerges that August was the month with the highest number of births (24), while February had the fewest (8).

There were more deaths in January (19), but very few in May (5). Regarding migration balance, the largest inflows occurred in October (105), with fewer in January and April (44). Many people left Castiglione in August (65), significantly fewer in April (22).

In short, the town, with such a sustained growth rate, will likely reach 19,000 inhabitants within the next couple of years. Now, even more, the local government must continue to ensure services and opportunities that meet the needs of its growing population.
