Salò Approves Lakeside Promenade Project for Summer 2002 Completion

The Salò municipal council has decided to approve the project for the first phase of the lakeside promenade from the Tavine area to Marino Zanca’s boat service. The cost of the intervention is one billion two hundred million lira.

“In February and March, we expect to obtain the authorizations from the Civil Engineering Department and the Drainage Court. By summer, the executive study will be drafted. We hope to complete the work by the summer of 2002,” said Bernardo Berardinelli, the councilor, during the assembly of the Amici del golfo (Friends of the Gulf), held in the Palazzo Fantoni’s Caminetto room.

The association, led by Aurelio Nastuzzo, had called upon a group of surveyors, architects, engineers, and geologists to redesign the entire stretch from the Mulino to the Canottieri. Some individuals, upon hearing that the assignment was free, withdrew. Others (Dario Alessi, Mauro Armellini, Federico Bana, Alessandro Barilani, Carlo Bosetti, Enrico Corradi, Fabrizio Derelli, Antonio Erculiani, Luigi Ferrari, Piero Fiaccavento, Giorgio Frassine, Cesare Pellegrini, Cristian Pollini, Mauro Salvadori, Giovanni Storari, Valerio Tinazzi) accepted the task.

They sat down at the table, contemplating the new project. “It will consist of a breakwater with protective boulders against wave action,” explained Corradi. “Inside, a pedestrian and bike path will be built with low-cost fill material. Green areas will be created, landscaped, illuminated, and furnished with benches.”

Details and Funding of the Project

“The beach,” intervened Berardinelli, “will have a minimum width of eight meters and a maximum of fifteen. The measure will depend on the water depth. The funding will come from the sale of the Amadei sports field or from the property currently used as a fire station, which intends to build elsewhere.”

“We also requested funds from the Regione (regional government), with deadlines ending on January 31,” (editor’s note). “If they arrive, we could use them for the second phase.”

“Almost two years have passed since we presented our idea,” recalled Nastuzzo. “After showing some slides of the lakeside areas of major Garda towns, we wondered why the coasts of Salò’s gulf were left in a state of neglect and decay, despite being in a stunning location. We collected 2,500 signatures and invited technical experts to help us.”

“Now, the municipal administration has included the project in its programs. This makes us satisfied and proud. We want Salò to be up to date. Other locations have adopted the idea of staying close to the lake, creating walkways at water level. They are as natural as possible, without massive retaining walls or visible poles, with easy access for those arriving by motorboat.”

Comments from the Mayor and Future Perspectives

The model to follow: the coastline developed between Riva and Torbole. Mayor Giampiero Cipani thanked the association (257 members in 2000, aiming to exceed 300 in 2001) for their efforts, urging them not to align with either the majority of the Polo or the opposition.

“Regarding the investments to be made, it is up to us to take responsibility: we have a strategy and an economic framework,” Cipani said, also announcing a public debate on the sale of the Amadei sports field.
