Castiglione Considers New Retirement Home After Feasibility Study

The Comune di Castiglione is moving swiftly on the issue of the new retirement home and will hold a meeting next week to decide on the future direction.

In particular, decisions will be based on the results of the study that was presented to party leaders and assessors. Following the controversies of recent months and after promising to explore a solution for building a new retirement home, the local government assigned a specialized company to prepare a feasibility study that considers both upgrading the Zanetti Cominelli retirement home to comply with regulations and constructing a new facility.

Study Results and Possible Options

The study’s findings, closely overseen by Piermario Azzoni, the urban planning assessor, and Erminia Biaggi, the social services assessor (both representatives of Castiglione al Centro), concluded that the most advantageous option would be to build a new structure, as bringing the Zanetti Cominelli home up to code for 73 beds would be very costly.

Regarding the location of the new retirement home, the study evaluated four potential sites: the Bersaglio area, the former Lido swimming pool, San Pietro, and Via Carpenedolo.

Taking into account both economic factors (cost, ease of urbanization) and accessibility (proximity to the town center, available space), the technical team identified San Pietro as the best site; the former Lido swimming pool and the Bersaglio ranked second and third respectively.

Alternatives and Prospects

Based on these findings, the guarantee and the entire municipal administration are now faced with three possible paths: the proposal from private Mantuans; constructing a new facility; and upgrading the Zanetti Cominelli home.

“We will need to discuss these options,” said the mayor, “to evaluate which route to take. Next week, we will hold a broader meeting, inviting party leaders, the council, and representatives of Zanetti Cominelli: together, we will assess the pros and cons of each option and decide how many of these initiatives to implement.”
