Brescia and Asola Rail Link: Mayor Treccani Discusses Regional Feasibility

Among the various projects on the table of Carpenedolo Mayor Valentino Treccani, there is a growing proposal to connect the town of Asola with the Brescia-based Lonato via a railway route, involving Castelgoffredo, Castiglione delle Stiviere, Carpenedolo, and Montichiari along the way. “The study which we have reflected upon – explains Treccani – currently stands as an idea that, only secondarily, could evolve into a definitive project. The idea originates from Ceresara Mayor Enzo Fozzato, who, in agreement with the municipalities involved, aims to create about forty kilometers of railway track linking the Brescia-Parma railway at Asola with the Milan-Venice line at Lonato.

Meetings Between Mayors

Encouraged by the administrative head of Ceresara, a meeting took place involving Mayors Valentino Treccani of Carpenedolo, Gianantonio Rosa of Montichiari, Arturo Sicurtà of Castiglione delle Stiviere, Morando Perini of Lonato, Mario Baruffi of Castelgoffredo, and Giordano Rivera of Asola. “The meeting has yielded promising results towards a future less reliant on road traffic. Of course, the specific route that the railway will follow was not discussed. In the meeting – Treccani confirms – we simply approved a memorandum of understanding regarding the feasibility of the idea.

Details About the New Railway Line

The new railway line aims to alleviate the intense freight traffic in the Bassa Brescia region, handling over 15,000 wagons annually. “The estimated investment amounts to around 80-90 billion lire,” reveals Carpenedolo’s mayor, “with a mixed capital investment from both private and public sources.” Carpenedolo will “benefit enormously” from the creation of this new railway, which “will certainly take environmental impacts into account,” Treccani asserts, studying the route with sensitivity. The project of the Asola-Lonato railway will be brought before the relevant offices in Regione, in the Province, and will be discussed with the Industrialists’ association, the Merchants’ association, and other interested groups.

Extensions and Implementation Timelines

Of particular interest is the Montichiari study regarding how to extend the railway route to Gabriele D’Annunzio Airport, which appears to have a natural inclination for cargo transport via aircraft. What about the construction timelines? “An initial estimate optimistically suggests we could see completion in five years,” concludes Mayor Treccani. “We can, in any case, be more precise within a few months.”
